– Where are we going from

This series is composed of 13 close-up pictures of ancient tombstones, shot at the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence in 2020. These tombstones date back to XIV and XV century and are a part of one of the most important historical mausoleum in Italy. On these tombstones where originally sculptured true portraits of the personalities buried, mostly high range monks or rich merchants. After centuries these bas-reliefs portraits are heavily worn and the marble reveals a beautiful waxy patina very similar to human bones. Today these severely worn out portraits, more than people from the past they remind some unknown creatures coming from the future. The attempt to freeze time by means of an image reveals here its entire illusory feature. The image created to last is destined to modify itself during the ages and gives life to a short circuit in the flowing of time. With the same intent than our ancestors that sculptured those tombs -and blinded by the same illusion- I printed these pictures using the standard archival printing method but well aware that probably they will survive me, but not the ages to come.
